South Dakota Hits Record Unemployment

Many people that I know, for the past couple of months, have been either looking at traveling to SD to find work or have actually made the trip as there is little to no work to be found in Minnesota.

SmartPolitics today points out that SD unemployment now is also increasing at record levels.

From December 2008 to January 2009, South Dakota’s unemployment rate rose 0.7 points – the largest increase on record, nearly doubling the second largest month-to-month increase (0.4 points from March to April 1980).

The unemployment rate in the Mount Rushmore state has just now passed 4% climbing to 4.4% in January 2009.  Still fairing better than Minnesota, one has to wonder as the rate of new SD jobless claims continues to climb, how long will our neighbor to the West be a solace to our own unemployed.
